GENERAL INFORMATION
The name Assam itself is derived from the Sanskrit word “Asoma” meaning peerless. It is one of the seven northeastern states of India.Assam is situated between 90-96 degree East Longitute and 24-28 degree North Latitude, in the North and the East Assam is bordered by the Nation Bhutan. Along the south there are Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram. Meghalaya lies to its South-West,and Bengal and Bangladesh lies to the west of Assam. The rich green fields and the dense forests of Assam is the gateway to the northeastern part of the India. Assam, the land of hills and valleys, the land of the mighty river Brahmaputra is wellknown for its rich flora and fauna. The capital of Assam, is Dispur, a suburb of Guwahati in 1972. The uneven topography of the land, full of hills, plains and rivers might, therefore, have contributed to her name. The Mongolian Ahom dynasty which had ruled Assam for more than six hundred years might also be the cause for her name. Assam is a land with an illustrious recorded history going back to the 4th century BC. Assam was an independent kingdom throughout all of history till the end of the first quarter of the 19th century when the British conquered the kingdom and annexed it to British India. The current state capital of Assam, Guwahati, known in ancient time as Pragjyotishpura or The Eastern City of Light, was the capital of Kamrup which finds frequent mention in the Great Hindu Epic Mahabharata and other Sanskrit volumes and historical lores. Assam's economy is based on agriculture and oil. Assam produces a significant part of the total tea production of the world. Assam produces more than half of India's petroleum.

The land of Assam, is in fact, peerless, judging by her exquisite natural beauty, cultural richness and human wealth. Assam has a rich legacy of culture and civilisation behind her. Home to different races of men - Austric, Mongolian, Dravidian, and Aryan, who came to dwell in these hills at different points of time. Assam has developed a composite culture of variegated colour. Assam, the land of hills and valleys, the land of the mighty river Brahmaputra, the land of Mother Goddess Kamakhya, lies in the northeastern corner of India. The culture of Assam is a rich tapestry infused with multicolored yarns of distinguished heritage of all the races that populate her. Generally the People of Assam can be divided into two major groups one is non- tribal and the other is tribal. People of both the groups are openhearted, friendly and all have the nature of providing great hospitality. The agricultural festival of Assam is known as BIHU. This festival is celebrated by all the Assamese irrespective of the caste and the creed. It is celebrated at various stages of the cultivation of the principal crop of Assam known as Paddy. In addition to all that, Assamese also celebrate some colourful festival such as Rangi Gobr and Harni gobra at the start of the cropping cycle Bohagiya visu- the Spring time festival,. Ambubasi Mela ,Jonbeel Mela and many more.
HERITAGE
Assam is the easternmost state of India having a large number of monuments belonging to the ancient time. The famous temples and monuments situated in Assam are Kamakhya temple, Nabagraha Temple, Mahabhairab temple, Da-Parbatia temple, The Institution of Satra and archaeological ruins of Madan Kamdev ,and most of these architectural grandeurs belong to the medieval period and represent the architectural style of the Koch, Kachari and Ahom royal courts. These temples and monuments, spread almost all over Assam, bear silent witness to the unforgettable past. CUISINE
Food culture in Assam is similar to the rest six northeastern states of India. Inhabitants of Assam are basically non-vegetarian due to their proximity with parts of Bengal Assamese shows more love for fish than any other state. In Assam people consume rice in variety of forms and flavors. A rice based sweet is a popular dish of this region known as Pitha . In Assam for the food preparation a little quantity of oil is used.

Assam has four well defined seasons in a year. Summer, monsoon, winter and spring-- these four seasons presents Assam in different moods. The best time to visit Assam is during the winters and spring seasons. October to April offer a mild and moderate climate. Assam is never extremely cold or hot.
