Palakkad derives its name from Pala (Alsteria Scholaris) tree and Kadu (forest), which goes to prove that the area was once full of Pala trees. Palakkad is located 79 km from Thrissur, Kerala on the Coimbatore-Thrissur highway. This picturesque town of Kerala is beautifully located in a gap popularly known as 'Palghat Gap' between the Western Ghats and the Nilgiri and Anamalai Hills.The plains are so fertile and productive that the district is considered the "Granary of Kerala".

Palakkad Fort - This fort is one of the best-preserved Forts in Kerala, built by Mysore's Haider Ali in 1766 AD. In 1790, the Fort was taken over and renovated by the British. Also known as Tipu's Fort, Palakkad Fort was supposedly built to stimulate communication between Coimbatore and the West Coast. Located on the banks of the River Sokanasini, this is a memorial to Thunchath Ezhuthachan, the author of Adhyatma Ramayana, who spent his last days here.
Dhoni - Dhoni, situated at a distance of 15kms from Palakkad is a fairly long climb of a 3-hour trek from the base of the Dhoni Hills. This reserve forest area with its small, beautiful waterfall has many tourists all through the year. It is a splendid and captivating waterfall. Dhoni provides trekkers the opportunity to explore its hilly terrains. Its lush green surroundings are a pleasure to watch. Dhoni is also famous for its farmhouse, harboring hundreds of cattle of Swiss variety. The Vishwanatha Swamy shrine, the oldest Shiva temple is situated 3 kms from Palakkad. The annual chariot temple is a gala event. The annual 'Ratholsavam' or Chariot Festival at Sree Viswanantha Swamy temple lasts for seven days.
Thiruvalathoo - The ancient temple here has some fine wood work and stone sculptures.
Siruvani - The reservoir at Siruvani was built for Tamil Nadu by the Kerala Government to meet the drinking water requirements of Coimbatore. The gateways on either side of the road across the dam are typical of the Kerala and Tamil architectural styles. Siruvani is also home to certain tribals like the Mudugars and Irulars.
Malampuzha - Malampuzha is a picnic spot in the lower hills of the Western Ghats. Malampuzha Garden is a famous picnic spot, which comprises a dam and beautifully landscaped gardens, is situated on the lower hills of the Western Ghats.
