Gwalior is an historical place of Madhya Pradesh . It is surrounded by District Morena in the North, District Shivpuri in the south, District Bhind in the East and District Datia in the west. The new city consists of three large areas, called Lashkar, Morar and Gwalior. Lashkar dominates in business activity while Morar serves as a market for the farmers and villagers of adjoining areas. Gwalior also known as Old Gwalior has most of the tourist places. The old city is covered with white sandstone Mosque, Palaces, rock temples and statues of archaeological and architectural interest. Gwalior occupies a strategic location in the Gird region of North India, and the city and its fortress have served as the center of several of North India's historic kingdoms. At present also its strategic location is marked by the presence of major air base at maharajpura.
Tourist Attractions in Gwalior
Gwalior Fort - This is a famous place at Gwalior that had been constructed by Raja Man Singh Tomar, during the 15th Century BC. It is 35 feet high and extends for 2 miles. The structure of the Gwalior Fort is magnificent and it is worth a visit.
Jas Vilas Palace - This is another site of tourist attraction at Gwalior. It is a kind of citadel that attracts attention by its magnificence and grandeur.
Sas Bahu Temples - The Sas Bahu Temple consists of two different sized temples that are placed side by side. The larger Temple displays Indian Architecture at its peak, so that the engravings are splendid and nice to look at.
Gujari Mahal - If Man Mandir reflects Man Singh's aesthetic sensibilities, Gujari Mahal speaks of his love for his ninth Gujar wife, Mrignayni, for whom he built a special palace outside the fort. It is now a museum and houses a very extensive collection of stone carvings, many of them rare and exquisite. The courage and beauty of Mrignayni and her love with Raja Man Singh are now a part of popular folk tradition.
Sun Temple - Located near the Residency at Morar, the newly constructed Sun Temple takes its inspiration from the famous Konark Sun Temple in Orissa.
Sarod Ghar - This Museum of Music has been set up in the old ancestral house of the legendary Ustad Hafiz Ali Khan. It houses ancient instruments of the great Indian Masters of yesteryears.It also houses an impressive collection of photographs and documents. Sarod Ghar is a unique institution devoted to promoting Indian classical music, heritage and culture.Through this 'window' to the past , music lovers can gain a better understanding of the evolution and history of our classical music and a deeper perspective and insight into the context of the art as it exists today.
Suraj Kund - Built in the 15th century, references to the Suraj Kund complex can be traced as far back as AD 425. Suraj Kund existed much before the city of Gwalior and is considered the place where Sage Gwalipa cured Suraj Sen of leprosy from the waters of this pond.

Climate of Gwalior - Climate is extreme with hot summers and cold winters. The maximum temperature during the summer months can touch as high as 46°C, while in the winters it can go down to below 5°C. Monsoon starts from the first week of June and remains there till August/September.
How to Reach Gwalior?
By Air - Gwalior is connected by Indian Airlines to Bombay, Bhopal, Indore, and Delhi.
By Rail - Gwalior is on the main Delhi-Bombay and Delhi-Madras rail link. Among major trains, the Taj and Shatabdi Express connect Gwalior with Delhi and Agra.
By Road - The most common and cheapest way of moving around the city is the six-seater auto-rickshaws. Taxis are also available so are mini buses. |
