Mount Abu is the only hill station in Rajasthan. It is just like an oasis, in between dry and scorching deserts of Rajsthan.Mount Abu is located in the south-western corner of Rajasthan. Although a part of the Aravalli range, it is detached completely from it by a narrow valley and the highest point, Guru Shikhar, is situated at its northern end. Interestingly, this is the highest point between the Nilgiris in the south and the Himalayan range up north. Mount Abu, owing to its good rainfall, has the richest vegetation in Rajasthan - a wide variety of trees and shrubs can be viewed as one drives upto Mount Abu.

People from across the country descend here to enjoy the pleasant atmosphere of this tiny hill station simultaneously with the aura of folk dances. Apart from natural beauty, Mount Abu also has historical and mythological importance.Mount Abu is not only one of the prettiest hill stations in the country, but a major Rajput and Jain pilgrimage center. The legend goes that a 'yagna' was performed here and four Agnikula or fireborn Rajput clans the Chauhans, Parmaras, Pratiharas and Solankis were created out of fire. Till 11th century, Mount Abu was an important Vaishnav and Shiva pilgrimage center, but now it has gained importance as a Jain pilgrim center.

Tourist Places in Mount Abu

Nakki Lake - The cozy little hill resort throbs around this artificial lake, believed to be dug out by the god's with their nails (nakh), and thus the name Nakki. The town forms an amphitheatre around this lake, doted with little islets. Boats, Shikaras and paddle boats are available for rowing on this beautiful lake.

Toad Rock - Rock carved by nature, overhangs the placid waters and it seems, as if the toad like rock is ready to dive into the blue waters of the lake.

Gaumukh Temple - This small temple is situated at 4 kms south of Mount Abu, dedicated to Lord Rama. It has derived its name from a natural spring flowing through the mouth of a marble cow. One has to take a path with 750 steps to reach the temple.

Adhar Devi Temple - The temple is chiseled out of a huge rock reached by a flight of 360 stairs. A favourite tourist spot.

Sunset Point - There are many view points around the town. Most famous among them is the Sunset piont which offers a spectacular sight of the setting sun when the hills are covered in the golden glow can be viewed from here.

Guru Shikhar - The highest peak on the mount (1722 mts. Above the sea level) allows a bird?s eye view of the sylvan surroundings of Mt. Abu. A small Shaivite shrine and a temple of Dattatreya standing on the shikhar are worth a visit.

Best time to visit - Between February and June or between October and December.
