Perched high at an altitude of 2500 mts, in Himalayas of the Garhwal region, Auli is the best location for skiers in the alpine snow capped lands of Uttaranchal. It is around 270 kms from the state capital of Uttaranchal, Dehradun.
Also known as a skier’s paradise, It has one of the best slopes in the world. The 3km long slope ranges from 2519 m to 3049 m offers a magnificent panoramic view of great Himalayan peaks like the Nanda Devi(7817m), Kamet(7756m), Mana Parvat(7273m) and Dunagiri(7066m).Flanked by coniferous and Oak forest slopes, Auli offers wonderful views of the surroundings. Auli is one of those less explored hill stations of India; and also having magnificent skiing facilities. Perched at a suitable height on the lap of the Nanda Devi and Mana parbat peaks, with snow covered peaks half of the year, Auli proves to be apt location for the adventurous. Another attraction here is a sight-seeing trip between Joshimath and Auli by a ropeway. This ropeway is 4 km long one and is called the Rajju and is at a height of 1917 mts to 3027 mts above sea level. This is the longest and the second highest ropeway in Asia. Two passenger cabins are used in this. Each cabin can accommodate from 20 to 25 people. This whole trip passes through ten towers. On the eighth tower of the ropeway one can stop because this is where one gets off for skiing and looking in and around Auli. It takes about half an hour to complete this trip.
How to reach: Nearest railhead is Raiwala near Rishikesh (250 km approx); from here one can take a bus/tourist cars early morning to reach Joshimath/Auli by evening. Nearest airport is Dehradun (300 km approx).
