This beautiful place is 2286 mts in altitude and 51 Kms. from Nainital. Surrounded by fruit orchards and thick coniferous forest it was developed by the Britishers as research and education institute (IVRI) in 1893. It is the celebrated scenic spot overlooking long ranges of Himalaya.An old temple of Lord Shiva exist on the top of a rockThe town's name derives from two Sanskrit words: 'mukti' meaning eternal life and 'ishwar' another term for god, and refers to an ancient legend in which a demon battles with Shiva, one of the three main gods of the Hindu pantheon, and, though the demon is defeated, he attains immortality. The small century-old Shiva temple, perched on an outcrop above the sleepy town, is a delightful place - serene, tranquil - from where you can look out across the magnificent valley spread hundreds of feet below.
Nearby is Chauthi Jali a vertiginous outcrop of rocks, and a great place for spotting eagles and other birds of prey as they circle the thermals. There is also picturesque little church perched on the side of the hill, which is seventy-five years old, and a PWD guest house with the famous hunter and writer Jim Corbett often stayed. Mukteshwar and in surroundings has nearly 200 species of birds, 15 varieties of fruits and over 75 varieties of flowers & 18 species of mammals.
EXCURSIONS Ramgarh (26 kms) A picuresque hamlet in the heart of apple, plum. peaches and apricot orchards. This fruit belt of Kurnaon is famous for its juicy fruits all over India.
Bhowali (40 kms) Situated at an altitude of 1706 rnts. on the main Haldwani-AIrnora road, Bhowali is a popular health resort.
Ghorakhhal (37 kms) Famous for the temple of Gollu Devta, a derni-god highly revered by the Kurnaoni people. The famous Sainik School of India is also located here.
