Srinagar is situated on the bank of Alaknanda river.Srinagar was once the capital of the Garhwal Kings before the arrival of British. Even today, it is one of the biggest township of the district and is the seat of the Garhwal University. It is located at the junction of roads from Kotdwar, Rishikesh, Tehri Garhwal & Badrinath. In the ancient times, Srinagar was an important centre for art & architecture. The old Srinagar city was destroyed later in the Gohna Lake dam-burst which destroyed all the old relics of the town. Today this town is an important cultural and educational centre. Baba Gorakhnath Cave, Shankar Math , Jain Mandir, Gurudwara, Kamleshwar Temple, Devalgarh, and Dhari Devi are worth visiting in and around Srinagar.

Places To Visit

Keshorai Math This temple is of great significance for its architectural beauty. The temple has been made of huge stones and the inscription on the stone of the main door reveals that around 1682 A.D., a person by the name of 'Keshorai' got this temple constructed.

Kamleshwar Temple Srinagar abounds in ancient temples and Kamleshwar is the most prominent among them. It is said that Lord Rama had worshipped Lord Shiva here with a thousand lotus flowers. One flower feel short and Rama compensated this loss by offering one of his eyes. That is the reason why he is also known as 'Kamal Nayan', meaning lotus eyed. Every year on the occasion of 'Vaikunth Chaturdashi', women come here to worship Lord Shiva whole night with lighted lamps.

Shankar Math This temple is at a distance of 3 kms. from the main town of Srinagar and is believed to have been constructed by Adi Guru Shankaracharya. The temple has a unique architectural beauty. The central room of the temple has the idols of God Vishnu & Goddess Laxmi.

Devalgarh Situated at a distance of 19 kms. from the main town of Srinagar via Chamdhar, Devalgarh was established by the king of Kangra named Deval. The Laxmi Narayan temple, Gauri Devi temple & Rajrajeshwari temple are the main attractions here. Inscription on the stones of the temples make them important from the archaeological point of view.

Dhari Devi Situated at a distance of 16kms. from Srinagar on Srinagar Rudraprayag motor road, is one of the popular religious centres of Garhwal. People from far and wide come here round the year, to pay homepage to Goddess Dhari Special worship is held here during festivals.
