Kalimpong is a very peaceful city located in the north of the state of West Bengal.It is a bustling and rapidly expanding, though still relatively small, bazaar town set among the rolling foothills and deep valleys of the Himalayan at an altitude of 1250m. It was once part of the lands belonging to the rajas of Sikkim, until the beginning of the 18th century when it was taken from them by the Bhutanese. In the 19th century it passed into the hands of the British and thus became part of West Bengal.
It is the best destination to tour in West Bengal. Kalimpong is not only famous of its handicrafts and monasteries but it is also well known for orchids and other flowers that grow in abundance here.Kalimpong's attractions includesa couple of solidly built churches, an excellent private library for the study of Tibetan and Himalayan language and culture, a sericulture,orchid nurseries and fine views over the surrounding countryside. Kalimpong keep you occupied for a couple of days, and for the energetic there's some good trekking.
Tourist Attractions in Kalimpong
Deolo Hill It is one of the numerous hill destinations that warrant a visit. A perfect picnic spot replete with a splendid tourist lodge, run by the Department of Tourism, DGHC. A stay here is definitely recommended as the early morning view of the sun lighting up the Khangchendzonga.
Kalimpong Arts & Craft Center It is a thriving center where carpet weaving, dyeing, painting, tailoring, leather craft and carpentry are taught, besides promoting the work of local artisans and craftsmen.
Raja Dorji Market Best explored on foot, the main market place is a bustling beehive of human activity where vendors vie with each other to sell off their homegrown food produce. The ‘haat bazaar’ typifies the traditional open-air market, a venue where villagers from the surrounding area are allowed to set up temporary stalls.
Tongsa Gompa The oldest monastery of Kalimpong built in 1692 by the Bhutanese during the occupation, and in their typical flavour.
Other Attraction of Kalimpong Neora National Park, Samthar Plateau, Kaffer / Lolay Gaon, Pedong, Flower Nurseries and Colonial Bungalows.
